BDSM store gets hit hard by corona crisis

While the demand for sex toys, vibrators and lingerie has increased significantly in recent weeks, the BDSM stores seem to be hit by the corona crisis.

That's what Ron Heuts, the owner of erotic shop Your Lifestyle in Heerlen, says.

All closed
"I have a lot of clients who work in clubs. They buy their equipment from me," says Heuts. "But everything's closed. Couples clubs, the regular clubs, massage parlours. Everything's closed. There's no demand for anything now." Heuts used to have a few hundred regulars, but now no one comes.

Over the past few weeks, the news has reported that sales of sex toys have risen since the start of the corona crisis. A lot of sitting inside, leading to all kinds of domestic entertainment, would be the explanation. But that doesn't apply to the SM market, says Heuts. "My turnover has dropped to almost zero. Precisely because everyone's at home."

No anonymity

Heuts also has many private customers, mainly from Belgium and Germany, but they don't come anymore either. "People have lost their anonymity. They sit at home together all day. I often have customers whose partner doesn't know they're buying here and they don't come anymore."

Anderhalvemeter society
The corona crisis couldn't have come at a worse time for Ron. He has to move his store in four weeks. A month without income, he'll be able to hold out, but not for much longer. And then immediately the following problem arises for the BDSM store in Heerlen: the one-and-a-half meter society. "At BDSM you get a lot closer."
